Why Not? Fashion presentation 2019

Why Not? is a collective that focuses on breaking through power dynamics of fashion runways in Singapore. The first public presentation in 2019 was held at The Substation showcasing six emerging designer works, providing autonomy and alternative resources that relevant institutions did not.

In 2020, it aims to showcase multidisciplinary fashion collections and concepts through the lens of textile, design, visual art and sound. We hosted a community mixer, invited voices from the industry to discuss the prospects of ‘changing’ fashion in Singapore with independent initiatives, and our readiness to see fashion as an art form & practice. We also curated a shelf of fashion, design and visual art books with Basheer Graphic Books for the event.

As the opening segment of the show, Lydia’s presentation makes the audience uncomfortable and curious, through the use of a pulsating deconstructive soundtrack, the spy cameras that will broadcast live images from the point of view of the models (much like reverse paparazzi) and campy, exaggerated actions that paints a different perspective on the human connection with technology through Lydia’s unique stylistic approach to the subject matter.
The segment starts of normal (as if a normal runway) with the use of pop music. It will slowly deconstruct into madness as the songs becomes distorted, faster. The audience should feel as though they are unable to keep up, until a final blow disrupts the entire setting - a metaphor for how draining technology is and will become. It should appear vibrant and clear but with a dark meaning hidden in plain sight.
